About This Program
Advance Your Career as a Machinist with NTMA’s Apprenticeship Program
The NTMA Machinist Apprenticeship Program is a paid, hands-on training opportunity where you gain valuable skills while you work. Combining classroom learning with real-world experience in a machine shop, the program covers everything from blueprint reading to CNC machine programming.
Offered by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Tooling & Machining Association, this program is available throughout Western Pennsylvania—including new locations in Johnstown and Somerset.
Earn While You Learn
This unique program blends classroom instruction and on-the-job training (OJT). Apprentices are required to complete:
- 2,000 hours of OJT annually, over a 4-year period
- 144 hours of classroom instruction per year, also over 4 years
During OJT, you’ll learn directly from experienced professionals—working side-by-side with mentors who guide you in mastering job-specific tasks.
Evening Classes, Real-World Skills
Classroom training is held one evening a week for four hours, from September through May. All instruction is conducted in person by the Pittsburgh Chapter NTMA.
Courses include:
- CNC Programming
- Blueprint Reading
- Jigs & Fixtures
- Machine Technology
- Die Design
- Machine Math
- Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing
Advanced placement testing is available for individuals who already have relevant experience or prior knowledge, and is offered before the start of each school year.

Choose from five convenient training sites:
- Central Westmoreland CTC (New Stanton)
- Northern Westmoreland CTC (New Kensington)
- BotsIQ Training & Education Center (Bellevue/Pittsburgh)
- Greater Johnstown CTC (Johnstown)
- Somerset CTC (Somerset)
Recognized Credentials
Upon completion of the program, you’ll earn:
- A Certificate of Completion from the Pittsburgh Chapter NTMA
- A Journeyperson Certification* from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry
- National Institute of Metalworking Skills Certifications are possible
* If your employer has registered you as an apprentice with the PA Department of Labor and Industry’s Apprenticeship and Training Office, you will receive the state certification once you complete 576 hours of classroom training and 8,000 hours of on-the-job training.
